Sr. Manufacturing Engineer

Overview

Yamaha has an excellent opportunity for a Sr. Manufacturing Engineer to join our Bennett Marine team in Deerfield Beach, FL. This position is responsible for supporting all aspects of the Manufacturing Engineering function. This includes activities and initiatives in the following areas: (1) Cost Reduction (2) productivity and waste reduction (Lean methodology) (3) Capacity Planning (4) Ergonomic improvement (5) Spec out, purchase, and install new Equipment (6) Mistake-proofing  (7) Operating, programming and troubleshooting robots (8) Scrap Reduction (9) TPM and 5S (10) Floor Layout Rearrangement (11) Perform Root Cause Analysis’ with corrective actions (12) Maintain SOP’s as required (13) OEE (14) Design of fixtures using Solidworks (15) and other activities as set forth by the Manufacturing Engineering Manager.

 

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

• Support cost reduction activities. Lead activities or work on smaller parts of a specific cost reduction project. Develop ideas to generate cost savings as well.

• Support productivity and waste reduction activities, (utilizing Lean methodology if one has that training and if not be willing to get it), and capacity planning initiatives. As Bennett Marine continues to grow, this position is responsible for removing waste from our processes to increase capacity and reduce lead times and costs

• Manage capital projects; create conceptual drawings, equipment specifications and bid documentation to facilitate a competitive bid environment. Must be able to take a capital project from the quoting stage with vendors, to installing the equipment and having work instructions created for an operator to use that equipment.

• Assists in the commissioning of new plant equipment and other systems to ensure that installation into the production facility is handled efficiently and with minimal disruption to production.

• Be able to train operators, engineers, other to operate and troubleshoot equipment in your respective department(s).

• Operate, program, and troubleshoot Yaskawa Welding robot.

• Support Ergonomic improvement activities. Support both short term (safety improvement recordable rate reduction) and long term (capital projects) ergonomic improvement initiatives.

• Perform OEE on equipment to reduce downtime, increase throughput and reduce scrap and/or rework.

• Participate in and/or lead kaizen events.

• Support Bennett Marine’s Machine Ownership Program (known as Operator Ownership in the industry). This is a program in which maintenance, manufacturing engineering and production all work together to better maintain and support equipment.

• Work with maintenance and production to create preventative maintenance plans, operator daily maintenance checklists, and other documentation to properly maintain our equipment.

• Support Manufacturing Engineering with all error-proofing (poke-yoke) activities. Ability to learn about PLC’s, logic, etc.

• Perform time studies as required to ensure standard time and standard cost accuracy in our SAP MRP system.

• Assist in the development of new products, processes or systems.

• Assist production to develop and maintain the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for production related processes and train operators, lead people, supervisors, and managers as required.

• Aid in the design of fixtures, jigs, etc in Solidworks CAD software, as required, to improve production processes.

• Support the Quality department with root cause analysis’s of scrap product and corrective actions. Need to learn the key input and key output variables so as to effectively identify root causes and implement fixes to the failures modes in a timely manner.

• Maintain a positive work atmosphere with respect and communicate with others in a professional manner.

• Provide technical support for engineering projects using MS Excel and Solidworks.

• Additional projects as required.

 

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Ocean, Manufacturing) or a related field and 10+ years in a Manufacturing Engineering role

• Experience using MS Excel, Solidworks, or another type of 3D CAD software.

• Comfort with operating in a challenging, fast paced environment

• Ability to meet and deal tactfully and courteously with fellow employees and vendors/contractors.

• Strong sense of urgency

• Previous successful completion of Lean Manufacturing projects

• Need to be very hands on and enjoy working on the production floor.

• Ability to pass a pre-employment, drug screen and background check

 

Desired Characteristics:

• 10+ years of experience as a project engineer, process engineer, project manager, manufacturing engineer or related occupation

• Experience with ISO 9000 is a plus

• Experience with production and manufacturing systems or process design based on Lean Manufacturing and similar tools.

• Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt

 

Additional Qualifications:

• Willingness to travel when required.

• Willingness to work some overtime hours or weekends as necessary to complete tasks or to communicate with our parent company Yamaha Motor Corporation in Japan.

 

Reports to: Manufacturing Engineer/Maintenance Manager.
